Leaving Whittaker Point
Monday, June 20
Paid our dock fee to Robert, then he and Henry helped us cast off at around 8:30 AM. We had a pretty nice run of about 25 miles on the Nuese river. The wind was on our port side. We waited to leave today because the wind had been so strong from the north for the last three days. After we got off the Nuese River we cruised by R. E. Mayo seafood market.
This market is known for its frozen and fresh fish. We were planning to stop and buy some seafood but they didn’t have much available today. We decided to keep on going to find the next anchorage. We got down to the Belhaven turn off at around 2:30 PM. We looked at going to the Free town pier, but realize it was for smaller boats than us so we anchored. There is also a city dock for one dollar a foot that has a 30 amp service. Tom brought his dinghy over and took both of us into town. There are a few nice restaurants here but most stuff was closed on Mondays. The Ace Hardware store has a lot of interesting stuff in it and one of the workers called it “the Belhaven Walmart”.
Since most of the stores and restaurants were closed John and Tom posed with the local crab.
Stopped at the local pub for a very cold beer. The name of the pub was called At the Rack Time pool hall. There were quite a few colorful local characters here and a REALLY cold beer.
There was nice deep water going into this town. In calm waters and low winds this is a very nice Anchorage. If weather is bad there are some anchorage around the corner south of Bellhaven that look to be more protected.
