Great Kills and New York

Sunday, June -Wednesday June 7

We left Atlantic City at 5;30 AM.  Since the weather is so good we have decided to travel 96.4 miles today and get into the New York Area.

The seas couldn’t have been better.   It was a long day but well worth it to get to to Great Kills at Staten Island.  Bruce has been calling John Calascibetta the Harbor Host from Great Kills Yacht Club for a few days and he only had room for SeaQuest.  Greek’s Folly and Short Vacation  stayed on mooring balls for $25 a night provided by Richmond County Yachtclub and used the ferry service that they provided to get us into Great Kills and Bev and Bruces boat.

The first day there we met John C and then we met John Scarcella , a retired NY fireman who did the loop with his family and is a member of the Yacht Club.   He knew that we needed to get oil for Bruce’s boat so he gave us his truck to use for the day.  Staten Island seems to be he city that New York forgot. That day we drove around Staten Island and saw Fort  Wadsworth and Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

The accents were fun to listen to and the people at the Yacht club were very friendly.  The Great Kills Club is a working mans club.  All the members do the work for the club, repairing things, putting in the docks etc.  There are over 200 names on the waiting list to join the club and the bar was inexpensive and fun.

On Tuesday John C drove us to the train station and we went on the Staten Island ferry past the Statue Of Liberty to Manhattan.   We got a 2 day pass to ride the Big Bus Tour and see the city. For the next 2 days we saw China town, 42nd street, Broadway, Central park, St Patrick’s cathedral, ground 0 and the Observation deck, and lots of other places.  It was rainy and cold but we made the most of touring the city.  I just wished that we could have purchased t-shirts while we were there.

At night we would drag ourselves home and have cocktails on Bev and Bruce’s boat before we would call the tender to take us back to our boats.
