5 miles from our wonderful Thomas Bay anchorage was the village of Killarney.
We got into Killarney Mountain Lodge in the morning. Aurora was still slipped at the marina so we were happy to catch up with them again.
This marina/Lodge has a pool, a sauna, kayaks, canoes, bikes, a coffee shop and a Lodge.
The lodge has scheduled activities throughout the day so we took advantage of these. The first was a hike to the lighthouse.
This was a little more adventurous than we had planned.
We were joined by a water snake.
After a grueling hike up and down and around we finally made it to the lighthouse.
They didn’t really tell how difficult the hike would be. We thought just walking on a path. Nope. We had to scramble up and down rocks and boulders and very steep sections. The guide offered to call back to the lodge and get a ride back to the marina. John and I took them up on that.
That evening we toured the new convention center that is being constructed on the property. It is called The Canada House. This will be the largest log convention center in the world.
This building was huge. Notice the jackscrews under logs in various places. The engineers fully expect the building to settle here and there. They plan for it by adding these jackscrews so they can adjust whenever the need arises.
These float planes come and go all day long everyday.
While we were in Brewerton Boatyard we met a couple that have a home in Killarney. Bill told us to call him when we got to Killarney and come over and watch the sunset from his screened in pavilion. Bill wasn’t there but told us to go over anyway. We were so glad that we did. He has a lovely home and a beautiful view of the water. Even though it was overcast and we couldn’t see the sun setting, we took a bottle of wine and some beers over and sat in his fabulous pavilion and enjoyed a wonderful evening outdoors with no mosquitoes.
The only thing that would have been better is to have Bill, his lovely wife and son join us.
The next day we rode our bikes around the small village and stopped at the few shops that Killarney has.
That evening we went to the Lodge bar and listened to a local musician Andy Lowe.
He was great and we liked him so much that we came back the second night to hear him again.
