Hidden Harbor Respite

Wednesday, April 5 through April 7
We left Jekyll Island around 7:45 AM. We got to Brunswick landing after a two hour Cruise up the Brunswick canal and took on fuel and pumped out. We left Brunswick landing and arrived at Hidden Harbor Yacht Club and Marina around 12:30 PM before the wind started to really pick up.
A couple of years ago John and I won a free stay for one night with electricity to Hidden Harbor at an AGLCA Rendezvous. We always stayed at Brunswick landing but decided this was the time to cash in on our free night. We were met by Craig and Barb on Blue Heron and Bobby and Alan, two of the dockmaster’s. Bobby is quite the character. We knew bad weather was coming so we decided to stay for about three nights.  Four other boats were there waiting on the weather too. One of the boats is a couple that keeps their boat at Hidden Harbor.  They had a car there so they could take us to the grocery store etc.
The first night we had Docktails in the captain’s lounge.  Around 3 o’clock in the morning one of the guys on the boat that stays there tapped on everyone’s boat because there was a Tornado warning and he felt we should go into a safer location than our boats. There wasn’t really any place safe so we all just stayed up by the captain’s lounge and watched the storm pass through for around an hour and a half. Tired, and bored, we all went back to bed and decided that we probably would be safer on our own boats.
The next day, I got a haircut in town and the group had a potluck dinner with Bobby providing the meat.  After dinner a few of us played Mexican dominoes.  The next morning, the wind had slowed a little but everybody decided to stay one extra day. That evening we took Bobby out for dinner at a local seafood restaurants. Everyone says that this trip is all about the people that you meet. It’s  not  just the boaters who make this trip memorable, we meet a lot of interesting and fun dock masters and marina personnel as we travel. Bobby is one of those people that you just won’t forget, much like with Miss Wanda at Alligator River Marina.
