Jekyll Island
Sunday April 2-Tuesday April 4
We left Jim and Danette’s at about 8:15 AM. We are now traveling through some areas that we are quite familiar with. Sunday night we decided to anchor at Alligator Pass. This is an Anchorage that we had stayed at before and enjoyed it, lots of room and a very quiet Anchorage. We slept in a little bit in the morning since we didn’t have very far to go today. The wind and rain really kicked up and made traveling very hard today. We had missed Cumberland Island both times that we had come up and down the ICW, so were we were excited about stopping and visiting the island today. The winds were so strong we decided to anchor at Buckhill Anchorage hoping to get away from the strong winds and rain. Not! We had winds up to 45 Miles an hour throughout most of the night. The island is so flat that there was no where to get out of the wind. Buckhill Anchorage is at the north end of Cumberland.
So now we STILL have never been able to get on Cumberland Island and see the horses or enjoy the history. We left the Anchorage at around 10 AM to let the wind and weather settle down a little more. We crossed the Saint Andrew Sound with no problem whatsoever. This is a sound that you must be very careful of because winds can make it pretty rough. We crossed the Sound and pulled into Jekyll Island after only having gone about 16 miles. Jekyll Island is a very cute island. The marina has a courtesy golf cart that you can use for 2 hours so we rode on it to the furthest part of the island.

Later in the afternoon, we got our bikes down and rode around to the downtown part by the beach stopping in to have a Swamp water Cocktail at a Mexican restaurant. That evening we ate dinner at Zachry’s Boathouse, the restaurant by the marina. This is an island that I could come back to. It is a beach island but it has some quaintness to it too.
