Visiting Charleston Day 1
Saturday, June 4
Got up, ate a quick breakfast and caught the 10 o’clock water taxi that goes from Charleston Harbor Marina (our marina) across the harbor to the center of Charleston. We walked around the city for a short while and then we went to the city market. The City Market is a must see if you visit Charleston. It is fun to walk through all the little stands that sell all kinds of things. It was a very hot and sticky day and we felt like we were melting but we went shopping anyway.
After shopping we had lunch at Hyman’s seafood restaurant. Hyman’s is a great seafood restaurant really close to the Market.
At 1:30 PM we took a Gullah Geechee Culture, Black History/Porgy and Bess Sea Island bus tour. Our tour guide was Al Miller.
He took us out to James Island, John’s Island, and around Charleston.
On John’s Island we visited Angel Oak Park where we saw Angel Oak, a Southern live oak tree that is estimated to be 500 years old. It stands 66.5 ft. tall and measures 28 ft. in circumference. Its longest branch distance is 187 ft. in length. The oak derives it’s name from the estate of Justus Angel (an African American slave owner and his wife Martha Angel. Local folklore tell stories of ghosts of former slaves appearing as angels around the tree.
We visited the McLeod Plantation.
Visited the memorial of Porgy at Burn Churchyard Cementary.
Drove by the historic church where Dylann Roof opened fire on June 17th 2015 killing 9 people.
This was a very different Way to look at Charleston and the south.
We took the water taxi back to our marina and the boys went shopping while the girls went to the pool at the resort.
When the boys got back we had burgers at the restaurant at the resort.
