Sapelo Island to Kilkenny Marina
Wednesday, May 25
We left the dinghy in the water last night. In the morning, we took the our dinghy over to Greek’s Folly and picked them up. Then we went to the Sapelo Island ferry landing and got on a bus and did a tour of Sapelo Island. Interesting little island. We toured the island and the RJ Reynolds mansion. Only 48 permanent residents live on the island. 6 students have to go on a ferry every morning to school over in Darien, Georgia. The ferry runs to the island three times a day.
This is Tom.
Lousy picture but the woman in green is the bus driver. She stood up and backed the bus up about an 1/8 of a mile. I have her up on a pedestal.
Look at the propeller cuts.
This little island has it’s own post office
Tom and Colletta from Greek’s Folly
Yep, it is a post office
John with the oldest resident on the island, she is 86 years old.
This is the Reynolds Mansion
They had a game room in the basement including a one lane bowling alley
This is the indoor pool. Covered now…
As you pull up to the mansion this is what you see…
When the tour ended everyone but us got back on the ferry. We jumped in the dinghy and went back to our boats. We put the dinghy back on the top and got ready to pull the anchor. We had some trouble pulling the anchor up the last 15 feet or so. I don’t know if the anchor was just buried or if it was something else. We used the boat to power the anchor out of the bottom. Ultimately, I just let a couple of feet of chain back out and we were able to pull it back up.
When we got going we cruised for about 30 miles to Kilkenny Creek Marina. Laid-back, Fishcamp type of marina. Exactly what I would think that southern Georgia would be all about. Had a great dinner at Marker 107 right next door to the marina. This is the only thing around the marina at all.
We walked a very short distance to a great restaurant called Marker 107.
