Anchorage

Friday, June 3

We left the Stono Creek Anchorage at a good time so that we could make it through Elliot cut just before you get into Charleston Harbor. This is a very narrow cut that has a lot of current running through it. We have to make sure that we go through this with the current running the way that we want to be heading. The current was so strong that we ran 12 to 13 miles an hour with the current pushing us through this narrow area.

We got to Charleston Harbor Marina at around noon. We were a little concerned because we saw a huge freighter coming into the harbor and we knew he would be moving faster that we were. We didn’t know how much of a bow wave or wake they put out nor if they would catch us before we got into our marina. It turned out to be a non-issue because we made it to the marina and they were going dead slow in the harbor and not throwing out a wake. We sat outside the marina as the freighter passed and were waiting to get inside to the fuel dock for a pump out before going to our assigned slip.

This retired Aircraft Carrier overlooks out marina.
You can see Short Vacation in her slip. The wind and current were both running and it was difficult to get into the slip. I missed at the first attempt because we did not have fenders out on both sides and there was a sail boat in the next slip. To make matters worse, they didn’t have pilings between the slips so I had to abort the first attempt. Oh well, we learned something new that day. Ask before

We spent the afternoon doing laundry and cleaning the boat. Peggy and Claude came over around 5:15 bearing all kinds of goodies, ready to spend the weekend with us. Pam is so excited that they are here to be with us.

Brenda and Glenn Young brought our van over to us and we had docktails and then went out for dinner in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.  We really appreciated them keeping our van and bringing it to us. They are such sweet people and we are glad to have them as new friends.
